Originally initiated to foster more women in science at the Weizmann Institute of Science, this year’s Wonderful Women event focused on resilience by ensuring the vital work of its education arm – the Davidson Institute of Science Education – continues apace.

The 2024 Wonderful Women event ― presented by the Shelly Avital and Darcy Morris Foundation – centered around the theme of the Healing Power of Science. It featured an engaging discussion of life post-October 7 and the pivotal role that science is playing in the rebuilding of Israel.

The evening began with a heartfelt tribute to the founder of the original Weizmann Canada Women for Science Committee, which initiated the prestigious Wonderful Women event ― the late visionary Marvelle Koffler.

Marvelle’s children Tiana, Theo and Tom Koffler kicked off the evening with the presentation of the inaugural Marvelle Koffler Award for Women of Distinction to Francie Klein, who took over leadership of the Women for Science’s vital work some years ago.

Francie Klein was an instrumental part of Wonderful Women for several years and today continues to demonstrate her leadership in many other Weizmann-affiliated roles. She serves on the International Board, National Board of Directors, local Toronto Chapter, and as Co-chair of the prestigious Vera and Chaim Weizmann Honor Society that recognizes donors who confirm gifts in their wills.

The evening then featured the current Wonderful Women co-chairs, Kelly Ostro and Ashley Steinhauer, who introduced the panel of outstanding speakers who brought their unique insights to the critical conversation about life post-October 7.

Mandana Dayani, Creator and Co-Founder of I Am a Voter | A renowned Iranian-American marketing and brand expert, Dayani has led significant initiatives across various industries, including her role as the former president of Archewell, the media and philanthropic company founded by Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. As a dedicated human rights activist, Dayani discussed the importance of activism, leadership, and resilience during challenging times.

Dr. Liat Ben-David, CEO of Weizmann’s Davidson Institute of Science Education | With her extensive background in science education, Dr. Ben-David delved into the crucial role of education during times of crisis. She highlighted how the Weizmann Institute is ensuring the continuity of scientific research and education in the face of adversity, and how these efforts contribute to healing and rebuilding communities.

Sara Foster, Actress and Advocate | Sara Foster is recognized for her advocacy work and dedication to various philanthropic causes. Sara has balanced a successful career in entertainment with a commitment to making a difference. She shared her perspectives on the intersection of art, activism, and the power of storytelling in shaping a better future.

The evening closed with remarks from Weizmann Canada National Board Chair, Dr. Art Slutsky, and CEO of Weizmann Canada, Susan Stern. They expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to connect with a community that deeply values the importance of science education and innovation in creating positive change for the future of humanity.
