The Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel is one of the world’s top research institutes. In 2025, it was ranked sixth in the world for research quality. Noted for its wide-ranging exploration of the natural and exact sciences, the Institute is home to more than 3,000 scientists, students, and supporting staff. Its scientists are advancing research on the human brain, artificial intelligence, environment, computer science, and space and particle physics; tackling diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and autoimmune disorders; and addressing climate change and food security and nutrition.
In 2025, the Institute launched Empower Tomorrow, an ambitious global campaign. The campaign is fueling the breakthroughs that will shape the next century and beyond to create a future built upon progress, hope, curiosity, and innovation.
Since 1964, Weizmann Canada has partnered with individuals, families, foundations, and the business community to develop funding for the Weizmann Institute; share the Institute’s research with the Canadian public; and promote science literacy and education. Weizmann Canada hosts interactive evenings with Institute scientists across the country, provides opportunities for high school and post-secondary students to participate in educational programs, and brings Canadians a front-row seat to research that has changed—and will continue to change—the world.
The opportunity
Weizmann Canada is recruiting energetic and enthusiastic board members who want to make a meaningful contribution by acting as ambassadors for Weizmann Canada. Candidates will have skills and competencies that align with the needs of the organization and demonstrate the highest standards of ethics and integrity.
Responsibilities of the Board include, but are not limited to, the following:
- safeguarding the vision and mission of the organization, and overseeing its strategic planning
- appointing officers and providing oversight of the chief executive officer
- setting policies, providing guidance, overseeing management systems, and managing risks of the organization
- complying with legal requirements, and overseeing financial/fiscal responsibility and accountability
- providing leadership in fundraising
- ensuring appropriate stewardship of donors and stakeholders.
Board members contribute to Weizmann Canada in many ways, including:
- making the organization one of their priorities
- contributing regularly and meaningfully financially to the organization
- opening doors to potential new donors and sponsors and participating in cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities
- attending a majority of Board meetings, participating actively, and bringing intellectual rigour and solid leadership experience to the meetings
- being a member of one of the standing committees of the Board, or possibly serving on an ad hoc committee or task force
- participating in Board activities, such as new director orientation and annual Board retreats
- participating in organization events and fundraising activities
- identifying potential new Board members
- acting as an ambassador for the organization and leading by example
- visiting the Institute at least once during their term.
