Food Security & Nutrition Hub: Why Now?

The Weizmann Institute is leading the new green revolution to feed a growing world population under a changing climate by improving the yield and nutritional value for the four major crops: corn, rice, soybean, and wheat.

The Institute for Environmental Sustainability (IES), Weizmann’s ambitious flagship initiative, brings together the Institute’s most accomplished researchers in seven core areas of scientific inquiry with the goal of protecting the environment and promoting sustainable living.

The Food Security and Nutrition Hub falls under The Food Security and Nutrition Center, one of the seven research centers within the IES. The hub will focus on the mechanisms that plants use when faced with adverse conditions to understand the processes and complexities involved and develop nature-based solutions for food security in the era of climate change.

Health Canada defines food insecurity as “the inability to acquire or consume an adequate diet quality or sufficient quantity of food in socially acceptable ways, or the uncertainty that one will be able to so.”
