A Tribute to Tom Beck

Tom was the driving force behind the Solar Tower project, a novel pan Canadian initiative, which culminated in the signature dedication of the Tom and Mary Beck Solar Complex. He was one of the co-founders of the Alternative Energy Research Initiative (AERI) which continues to thrive on campus, attracting scientists from all faculties and developing unique technologies to address the world’s energy and food needs.

Tom Beck died March 13, 2016, at home, surrounded by his family.

Tom was a founding member of Weizmann Canada, a board member since 1980, and a Life Member of the International Board in Rehovot.

He served as Deputy Chair of the International Board of the Weizmann Institute, and held key positions on the Executive Council and Committee. He was President of Weizmann Canada from 1985 and 1990.

In 1991, Tom received the Institute’s highest honour, PhD (Honoris Causis), for his leadership, generosity and unwavering commitment to Weizmann.

Along with his wife Mary, Tom supported many ground breaking research projects on the Weizmann campus, where he was widely admired by staff and scientists alike, known for his warmth, charming wit, inspiring leadership and generosity.

He was a modest, graceful man who led an exemplary life and left an enormous legacy. Tom was a true friend to the Weizmann Institute.
